Pixel 8a: Google confirms affordable Pixel 8 series smartphone is in works

Google claimed the Pixel 8a is being developed in an unconventional manner. In response to a question about the battery life of the Pixel on its official forum, Google stated that it plans to release a comprehensive battery information page along with the Pixel 8a smartphone. Additionally, the business stated that the battery information page will work with smartphones starting with the Pixel 8a.

The phone is anticipated to have a design influenced by the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, and it may have an updated chipset and cameras. Alleged web leaks of the Pixel smartphone's retail box have revealed details about its model number, appearance, and specs ahead of its official release. According to rumors, the Pixel 8a will have two rear cameras and perhaps support 27W wired fast charging.

The design of the Pixel 8a appears to match what we saw on multiple leaked renders ahead. The retail box image suggests that the smartphone will support 27W wired fast charging.

Google is believed to announce the Pixel 8a at its I/O event sometime in May. The handset is expected to debut as a mid-range offering. The price of the Pixel 8 in India starts at Rs. 75,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model, while the Pixel 8 Pro starts at Rs. 1,06,999 for the 12GB RAM + 128GB storage model. Meanwhile, the Google Pixel 7a is priced at Rs. 43,999 for the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage model.

In October of last year, Google began selling the new Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. As a replacement for the Pixel 7a from last year, the less costly Pixel 8a is anticipated to launch in May.

On a secret Facebook group, a Vietnamese user named Hung Nv (@chunvn8888) shared purported retail box photos of the Google Pixel 8a. The phone's model number appears to be G6GPR based on the photograph. The phone is pictured in retail packaging with rounded corners and a black color scheme, just like the Pixel 8 phones. It looks to have two cameras on the back in addition to an LED flash inside the camera module that resembles a visor. On the right side of the phone are the volume rockers and power button.

Google's Pixel 8a launch accidentally confirmed by a company engineer during a chat about device bugs and battery stats. The phone is expected to be on the market within the next few months.

Similar to its predecessor, the Pixel 8a would likely be targeted to customers looking for a more budget friendly alternative to Pixel 8 and 8 Pro smartphones. Although the company has not provided any details regarding the launch of the upcoming smartphone, it is likely that the Google Pixel 8a will be unveiled in the coming months, most likely in May when Google hosts its annual developer conference.

Google Pixel 8a: What to expect

The Google Pixel 8a is expected to be powered by the same Tensor G3 chip as its older siblings, according to news reports. It is anticipated that the Pixel 8a would include 8GB of RAM, just like its predecessor. That may be the first Pixel A-series gadget with a 256GB storage option, though.

Regarding design, the Pixel 8a is probably going to go after the Pixel 8 series smartphones' form factor. It is anticipated that the smartphone would have more curved edges than its brothers. Other than this, the forthcoming Pixel smartphone shouldn't see any significant modifications.
Because it has the same chipset as the Pixel 8, the Pixel 8a would probably boot Android 14 and receive most, if not all, of the generative AI features seen on the Pixel 8. But since Zoom Enhance and Video Boost aren't accessible on the Pixel 8 smartphone either, it's unlikely that the Pixel 8a will get some of the Pixel 8 Pro's exclusive capabilities. Furthermore, Google might offer the same seven-year OS the same software upgrade as the other smartphones in the Pixel 8 series.

Google has accidentally let slip some information that pretty much confirms they're working on the Pixel 8a.This can be considered the first time Google has dropped a hint about the Pixel 8 albeit unintentionally. A Google software engineer was chatting with users about some bugs, particularly focusing on battery stats. During this chat, the engineer dropped a hint that this missing feature would be back with the Pixel 8a and future models.

There's talk that this feature will return with the Pixel 8a and could even make its way to all Android phones when Android 15 is released later this year. The first official confirmation from Google that the Pixel 8a is in development comes from an unintentional leak. Considering Google's prior practices around the release of phones in its Pixel A-series portfolio, it's not wholly unexpected.

As for when we might see the Pixel 8a hit the market, rumors are swirling that it could happen in the next few months, maybe around the time of Google I/O in May. And as for the price, there's talk that it might go up a bit, similar to how the Pixel 7a was priced compared to the Pixel 6a.

Previously, a report by Win future stated that the Google Pixel 8a is set to make a comeback in the market with two memory options, and it's expected to be available in at least four different color choices. However, there's a twist in the pricing compared to its predecessor. According to information obtained from German retailers, the starting price for the Pixel 8a is likely to exceed 550 euros, which is around Rs 50,000 in India, marking a significant increase from the Pixel 7a, which began at 499 euros, which is less than Rs 45,000.

Retailer data indicates that Google plans to offer the Pixel 8a with either 128GB or 256GB of storage, with no indication of a higher memory variant at this time. Last year, Google focused on promoting the 128GB version of its affordable model, often providing substantial discounts shortly after its launch to boost sales.

Google accidentally confirms Pixel 8a’s existence

Unintentionally, a Google executive has disclosed that the Pixel 8a and subsequent models would reintroduce a function that was recently deleted from Android.
This is the first time the phone's existence has been acknowledged by the corporation. The phone, in all honesty, was never a big secret.
Before we continue, let me explain. Several customers complained that the Settings > About Phone > Battery Information page had vanished. This led to the discovery (via).

In response, a Google representative stated that this page will be functional "on Pixel 8a and beyond, indicating that it is operating as intended."
Remarkably, the Battery Information tab was eliminated from the most recent version of Android 14 QPR2, despite being accessible in early beta editions of Android 14 QPR1 last year. Other than the date of manufacture and cycle count, not much information on the battery has been provided by this. It is obvious that the removal of this feature was planned after receiving confirmation from Google. The good news is that the Pixel 8a and later variants will bring this capability back.
